If the drumming wasn't so boring.

Oh, if only you were as exciting as the drumming. Then we wouldn't know exactly what you're going to say before you hit Submit.

Yeah, given this board's preference for the lame, I agree with you--it doesn't really fit in among the top 20. I mean... Slayer? Hahaha. Give me a break.

Whatever. Slayer's records over the last 18 years have been so fucking lame that I'd rather listen to hipster shit like Isis and Baroness before boring myself to death with burnt out, fourth-rate "thrash" metal. Sorry, but at least Baroness are doing something besides rehashing their own shit.

Well not to detract from all the poo-pooing going on here, but I bought the Baroness and gave it several attentive listens. It's my first purchase from this band so I didn't know what to expect. It's got a lot of cool ideas and themes, but they sound a bit mundane at times. They vacillate between moments of greatness and long, drawn-out passages of utter banality. Plus, that vocalist could use some serious work.......

Anyway, didn't mean to barge in.....as you were...

1 Nile - Those Whom the Gods Detest 1
2 Napalm Death - Time Waits for No Slave 18
3 The Chasm - Farseeing the Paranormal Abysm 9
4 Asphyx - Death the Brutal Way 15
5 Mastodon - Crack the Skye 4
6 Funebrarum - The Sleep of Morbid Dreams 94
7 Candlemass - Death Magic Doom 13
8 Seance - Awakening of the Gods
9 Katatonia - Night is the New Day 2
10 Altar of Oblivion - Sinews of Anguish
11 Destroyer 666 - Defiance 43
12 Crucifist - Demon Haunted World 85
13 The Gates of Slumber - Hymns of Blood and Thunder 74
14 Goatwhore - Carving Out The Eyes of God 32
15 Slough Feg - Ape Uprising 35

All but 2 of my albums made the top 100, not really sure what that means, or what it says about my tastes.

I was disappointed that Seance didn’t place, I thought that that album was a very worthy return for them.

I would have liked to see that Funebrarum album finish higher. I know that it is nothing new, but it is just so nasty sounding and well written.

If I had gotten the While Heaven Wept album earlier, it probably would have made it at least to the middle of my list. That album kicks some serious ass, I am really enjoying it.

Baroness are awesome live, but the recording on the new album sucks and the guy's vocals need improvement. It's still better than the new Slayer, though, which is only okay.

My list has changed a fair bit since I submitted to the original thread, so it'd be pointless posting it, but I'll say this - it's been a solid year, and I feel that next year will bring less good albums, but a couple of serious classics, which i feel this year lacked.

I don't know. I think the year has brought some classics, albeit from off-the-beaten-track bands like Cobalt and The Chasm.

Don't get me wrong, there were tons of records I loved this year (Coalesce, Katatonia, Napalm Death, The Chasm), but when I say classic I mean a genre-defining masterpiece. The last couple of years have been lacking in those, and I'm hoping to see that change in the coming year. It seems like recently bands have either been refining their formula, doing something quirky and unfocused for the hell of it, or aping other, better bands. This can result in awesome albums sometimes, but it's been a while since I heard something that was utterly mindblowing and redefined how I listen to music. I can smell it in the air though... something awesome is cooking. No real way to define why I feel that way, it's just a hunch, but still.

New Anathema record, perhaps?

I think it's going to be more and more rare to find genre-defining classics in a time where metal and its subgenres are already pretty well-defined. I don't really require it in order to enjoy a band. But I do agree, it'd be nice to be surprised from time to time.

As a genre-defining masterpiece? Which completely-cut-off-from-metal genre are you talking about?

I could give a fuck less whether the album is metal or not - I'm more interested in hearing something innovative and memorable. Ever heard of rock music?
