I've heard it's like the mid90s stuff, that would be fine for me.

Big disappointment for me. The tunes are heavy and go back to the Black in Mind sound but not as catchy. Also, Peavey's vocals are shot and really get on my nerves with this album...like he needs to clear his throat the entire time.

I'm going to start compiling it tomorrow.

As a huge Rage fan, I really liked it....and yes..back to the more stripped down early sound (more late 80's early 90's stuff IMO)....although this band can do no wrong for me as I admit my bias.

Here's a track

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBbAF9IPnZ8

...and Peavey sounds fine, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Also the 2-Disc deluxe version is great for the new bonus tracks (3 of them) and 3 covers (Skid Row, Rush and Y&T)

1. Crippled Black Phoenix – Bronze
2. Ulcerate – Shrines of Paralysis
3. Deathspell Omega – The Synarchy of Molten Bones
4. Blood Incantation – Starspawn
5. Anciients – Voice of the Void
6. Anaal Nathraakh – The Whole of the Law
7. David Bowie – Blackstar
8. Sturgill Simpson – A Sailor's Guide to Earth
9. Asphyx – Incoming Death
10. Destruction – Under Attack
11. Glenn Hughes – Resonate
12. Witherscape – The Northern Sanctuary
13. Neurosis – Fires Within Fires
14. Motorpsycho – Here Be Monsters
15. Spiritual Beggars – Sunrise to Sundown

This will probably change a bit (depending on when the cut-off is!).

As I go back over my 2016 albums, this was actually quite a good year and I had trouble boiling it down to a top 15. That said, I can't say that any one album was head-and-shoulders above the others. Some surprisingly strong showings by Destruction and Glenn Hughes that I never saw coming, a Spiritual Beggars album that finally sees the band all-out embrace its inner Deep Purple, an impressively balanced and concise entry from Neurosis, one hell of a curtain call by Bowie, Asphyx proving that they can still cut the doom-death like nobody's business...and, of course, Crippled Black Phoenix, a perennial favourite that continues to impress.

Yep I agree. The top half of my list could have been #1 in a slower year. I think it's been the best year in at least a decade and even better than the awesome 2014.

There are two posters whose absence of lists are really missed this year.

Yep, those two in particular have been instrumental in helping me discover lots of stuff I'm currently into. I'm not ashamed to admit it. Could always count on BCTW and Burning Blade to show me something cool I didn't know about.

Life happens!

Hastily posted list on page 2. I don't love my list this year, because it is not very fine-tuned and I haven't listened to as many albums as I have in past years.

Going to make more of an effort to keep up with the 2017 releases.

There's just so much I haven't heard yet or given a proper listen to yet. This past year with school and working at night has kicked my ass time-wise. I go weeks at a time without touching my computer, so I never have the chance to order stuff or burn music to CDs for the drive to school (which is a 30 minute drive - ideal for listening to new albums).

Plus, I know I've forgotten about stuff from earlier in the year.

List up on page 1. I'll quote it here so you don't have to go look for it, if you care.

13. Chthe’ilist - Le dernier crépuscule
14. Cantique Lépreux - Cendres célestes
15. Vektor - Terminal Redux

Black metal heavy. Some stuff I didn't feel I should list because I haven't listened to them enough are Cultes des Ghoules, that most certainly would make the list, but I've only listened to it a couple times. Master's Hammer. Moonsorrow. Inverloch. Darkthrone. Plus stuff I didn't get around to like Bethlehem and Mortem.

Vektor made it because it had a few more listens than these others. Normally I wouldn't list an EP, but I listened to it so fucking much. I think I made the same exception for the Cosmic Church EP last year.

I didn't listen to much new metal this year. :)

I should check out that Baphomet's Blood. They rip, but I guess they fell off my map a bit. Seeing now it's been since 2009 they released that full last one. Long time.

Here's my final list from page 1. Wish I got more time to spend on the Sonata Arctica before finalizing but whatever. If I re-do this list 1 year from now it will probably be quite different anyway. Once I have a few moments I will go through this thread a little more thoroughly and scrutinize all yous guys' joke lists. Katatonia FTW!!!!!!!

1) Katatonia - The Fall of Hearts
2) Destruction - Under Attack
3) Horseback - Dead Ringers
4) Gruesome - Dimensions of Horror
5) Grave at Sea - The Curse That Is
6) Dark Funeral - Where Shadows Forever Reign
7) Meshuggah - The Violent Sleep of Reason
8 ) Sonata Arctica - The Nincth Hour
9) Lost Society - Braindead
10) Obscura – Akroasis
11) Devin Townsend – Transcendence
12) Voivod – Post Society
13) Avantasia – Ghostlights
14) Sodom – Decision Day
15) Anthrax – For All Kings
