I defended it before hearing it, and have only listened to it through once in the car, right after I listened to something awesome, but I was pretty underwhelmed by the new D666. Obviously it will get many more spins, but that was my initial feeling when it ended.

It should have been an EP.

I'm pretty disappointed with it...

Edit: I listened to it again and enjoyed it a lot more. Then I listened to it again and liked it even more after that. It's a grower. Give it time.

Blaze Bayley - Infinite Entanglement

Image

I honestly don't know anything about Blaze Bayley outside of Iron Maiden. I love the two Maiden albums with him, and I've been thinking about checking out some of his solo work, but I've never gotten off my ass to do it.

I recently saw that he has a new album coming out this March, and decided to check out the new video for the song Human. I was really surprised with how good it is, and I've listened to it a handful of times over the past couple of days.

Baphomet's Blood - In Satan We Trust

Image

Ok, despite what the band name and album cover imply, this isn't black/death band #356346. Baphomet's Blood are a satanic speed/thrash band hailing from Italy, signed to Iron Bonehead. I came across this album after Fenriz played the first track on this album on his radio fenriz soundcloud (worth checking out, btw). There's a whole lot of Motorhead spattered throughout, without sounding too much like yet another Midnight clone. It's pretty rippin', and if you're looking to scratch a thrash metal itch but also stay cognizant of newer releases, you could certainly do worse.

Like the Baphomet's Blood? Or did you find it a little too polished for your liking, and want your speed/thrash to be dirty as fuck? well either way, this is right up your alley:

Gehennah - Too Loud to Live, Too Drunk to Die

Image

Yeah, that Gehennah. King of the Sidewalk Gehennah. This is their first full length in 19 fucking years - Decibel Rebel came out in 1997. Whatever the reason for that monumental lapse (signs point to laziness), what the fuck took them so long? This rules. I'm actually surprised by how much I like this. This is street metal at its fucking best. Fuck off the wimps, fuck off the posers, this album was recorded with a fucking grown.

Gehennah Will Destroy Your Life

Ripper - Experiment of Existence

Image

Fucking killer old school sounding death/thrash from Chile. Very reminiscent of early Pestilence and Sepultura. If you're into that shit, get on this shit, because this rules. Will be on my year end list for sure. DO NOT OVERLOOK THIS.

Can confirm this rips (pun not intended.... OR WAS IT?!). The sound is so menacing, the aggression so raw. Great solos, pretty reminiscent of Sepultura - Schizophrenia's epic style, but the riff attack is totally Pleasure To Kill with a fuller production. So much awesome in this, and not sounding at all like a clone.

Right? It'd goddamn excellent! I wouldn't be surprised if it's my number 1 album for this year. Fucking savage.

That Gehennah is above and beyond, too.

Yeah I gave it a shot this morning and the Gehennah is great. Basic, winning recipe, has a lot in common with Midnight (even if Gehennah is a precursor, we haven't heard them in ages), I love the midpace approach to some songs like Scumbag who works perfectly for this kind of dirty rock/punk/metal hybrid. Love the guitar tone too - sounds like straight from the 80s. Very organic drums as well, which gives it a sense of authenticity.

Look like I'll be spinning this one a lot I'm sure :)

I'm stoked about the album. If you haven't heard his other solo output, check out Silicon Messiah, The Man Who Would Not Die, or Promise & Terror.
