Spectral Lore - Gnosis

Listen Here

I've listened to this for a few times now, and I believe that this latest work is Spectral Lore's best. Described as an "EP", this clocks in at 49 minutes, which isn't surprising considering the absurd playtime of Spectral Lore's full lengths. It's actually a point of contention for me, II and III are simply far too long and they wear out their welcome. This, however, is the perfect length, though I'd really consider this a full-length.

There are similarities to ANAEL's works here, most notably "From Arcane Fires", which to me is welcome to these ears.

Thanks for the reminder! Was waiting for this bad boy to come out, and it's as awesome as I'd hoped. I already love III and Voyager (also 2015 EP)...but this takes the cake. I think it may indeed have to shuffle something off my Top 15.

Shroud of the Heretic - Unorthodox Equilibrium

Image

Death/doom from Portland, featuring the bassist from Sempiternal Dusk on bass/vocals. Mostly on the death metal side with some slower doomy passages and a bit of Disembowelment in their sound. Been a bit of a grower for me and I like it a lot now.

I need to find a torrent of this MGLA record. Dirty-ass thrashy black metal, yes?

Mgla is really just straight up black metal. Unique however. And some of the tracks on the new album may remind you of Inquisition. They do me.

By the way, how do you pronounce the name 'Mgla'? For years I've just been sayng 'Mig-La' but feel that's wrong for some reason.

The MGLA is all about the riffs (although those cymbals...). You do well to check it out. Track I, IV, V and especially VI are as triumphant as black metal gets this year.

Check out the lyrics too.

New 7 inch EP from CC Company. Band features a couple guys from Enforcer, and play riffs that sound like they would fit nicely on the Ace of Spades album. Great stuff.

I have their first EP. Solid stuff. Just wish they'd release a full-length.

Khemmis-"Absolution", bought based on Decibel's year end list wherein they described it as Candlemass meets "powerslave" and while I may not agree with all that, it does kick ass

Yup. AOTY easily. The drumwork alone is the best this year. Not to mention all those delicious riffs.

If they keep cranking out 3 song 7 inches of quality, balls-to-the-wall metal every year, I'm good with that. Three 7 inches released in three years, and not an ounce of filler to be found.

I thought the Mgla was a big step down from their last album and far from the best this year.

Wasn't 'With Hearts Towards None' another big step down for you as well?
