Yup, Uber definitely had it coming. Their whole business model is dependent on dishonesty about what it is they are doing.

When it became clear people would never accept being micro-chipped, technology found a way to embed surveillance in our lives. Now we carry around all the surveillance agencies wanted to push on us willingly. Our phones are just part of that.

I've been saying this for twenty years--nobody needs to chip you if they can just see your entire life online. Everything including your travel history is well documented nowadays.

Best move is to turn that shit off completely.

Some ways to minimize the damage:

- Turn off cell data/WiFi until needed.
- Don't use Facebook and Messanger/Hangouts/whatever apps. Use the web interfaces instead, through a secure mobile browser like Brave or Firefox Focus instead if absolutely necessary
- Keep a SIM removal tool on your keychain

I only turn my location on when I need to use it for GPS, and that means almost never. It's funny how often it tries to find excuses to ask you to turn that shit on. Fuck that, shit stays off. Everything stays off until I need it, stupid phone.

I should probably do that too. On my iPhone I have it as 'only use locations when app is open' or whatever and that's really just for my Google Maps/GPS app. I don't even know how much that makes a different. They probably can track this shit anyways. But I don't really care. Such is like in 2017. Doesn't really change anything for me... does it?

Other than that I'd say tlp is right. Pretty much disconnect from everything if it's something that bothers you.

I'm close to getting rid of facebook completely though because it's fucking terrible in so many ways now... but it's still good for creating/attending events/concerts.

The little pokey stick thing that a lot of phones come with. It's for phones like iPhone and others that require a poke to remove the SIM tray. Not all models require it, but I carry one around on the keys just in case. I've had several instances where I've had to use it.

A paperclip works too, but those fall off of the keys.

In what instances have you had to remove it?

Unlocking phones, switching SIMs to a new phone, etc. I do a lot of IT work, it comes in handy there a lot.

Removing the SIM also prevents any and all tracking (including Stingrays/cell tower spoofing/cell phone tower bounce tracking). So if you're ever thinking of getting completely off the grid, you can help yourself by removing the SIM and turning off the phone. If you don't remove the SIM, the phone will still connect to nearby towers even if the phone is off, as long as there's a power source (battery) in the phone. Just make sure you've also turned off your phone once the SIM is out because it might still connect to Wifi networks even without the card inside.

This article made me think of this post. https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2017/1 ... ght-wrong/

Apps can track you, even with Location Services & GPS disabled.

How much people trust apps is astonishing. I have maybe 10 on my phone and assuming the permissions are accurate there's low risk for me, but really, who's actually checking the permissions are accurate?

Yep. That article is why turning off cell data is a much better option in general.

I don't have a lot of apps on my phone in general and those I do have are limited as to what they can do by my phone, which allows me to remove permissions for most things manually. And like I said above, I don't use apps like Facebook. I just run them through a secure browser instead.

I started keeping my data off with an old Samsung when I found the battery life was like 3-4 days instead of just 1, so my data is almost never on :D

I got Minimal (to do list), Trolly (shopping list), K9 Mail (email), and local weather, fuel & public transport apps that's about it.

Can't use my phone when driving or sitting on a bus, I get vertigo something fierce, so I'm pretty much at a computer for 99.5% of my web usage, so need need for many apps.

Apple first got into trouble for sneakily throttling-back the speed of older iPhones. They claimed that it was "to preserve battery life" (obvious lies and balderdash):

https://venturebeat.com/2017/12/27/apple-faces-8-lawsuits-over-throttling-of-older-iphones/

And now there's word of a a security vulnerability that has been in Mc OS's for 15 years:
