what's the second line of the lyrics on the 4th track of celtic frost's debut album?

That would be "Dawn of Megiddo"

The second line is: "We have to die to be reborn"

Basically, which bands do you know virtually everything about. As in you can name the lineup in every album, tracklist/label of every album, most lyrics, extensive background stuff, all that kind of shit.

If there's one band that I'm pretty sure I'd be able to answer every question about, it's Slayer. Otherwise I'm not that heavily knowledgeable of even my favorite bands.

In order:
Dream Theater
Yes
Savatage
King Crimson
Anathema

Y'know. All that "old-school fucking thrash metal" stuff.

Hmm, Slayer would probably be the closest I could get to this, but really probably no one :o :(

Googy on the lappy.

It's only right if you pronounce the word as "istorian" instead of "historian". Otherwise, it's wrong.

It's pronounced 'gif'.

Lizzy & Prince for me.

I probably know more than any rational human should about both.

I am a historian. I have a BA in History, and I write history books about World War 2 as a hobby. So I approach my favorite bands from the viewpoint of a historian, which is why you see me make detailed posts about them from time to time.

Most of all, I'm a historian of Dio's career, from Rainbow through Sabbath to the Dio band. Then it would be Rush. But also Steely Dan, Summoning, and lately, V-KhaoZ and his many projects.

I think I can add The Temptations to my historian resume.

Also Pantera, just because I was there for the early club days until they went platinum.

I don't know. I don't invest a lot of time memorizing that kind of stuff. I guess R.E.M. might be the closest for me, but that's probably because I read a few biographical books about them years ago.

Like I said, being a historian is not about knowing all the songs by heart. Of course I don't know all lyrics, that's insane!

Well that's why I said "most" lyrics, not all, but those people do exist. And I think there's a difference between an historian and an expert. Historians know more than most but are always learning more. :)

Probably none if you are talking about knowing everything about every era. I was thinking maybe Maiden, but I know that a real historian of them could name every single and it's side. I probably couldn't do that. Bolt Thrower comes to mind, but really there isn't much to know with them, so it's easy. I also tend to drop bands after a point when they don't move the meter for me, so I might know everything about a 5 album run, and very little about the next 4 albums.

I think that my overall knowledge is pretty strong, but it's more related to certain types of metal, or different movements. Like, Swedish death metal, or Norwegian black metal. I remember a lot of very specific things off the top of my head that most people either forget, or don't care about. Unless we are talking about certain periods of death metal though, a specialist will always turn up that knows more. Still, I can carry on a pretty good conversation about most metal related things. It used to be an asset before the internet became what it is today, but know anybody can find anything so what I remember is fairly unimportant. Being the knowledge guy was a heck of a lot cooler in the 90's. It means jack shit now really, but I still remember shit, because I like to learn and have a good memory. Again, traits that were much more useful in the past.

Well the main difference being that "Historian" is the name of a profession. I am one. Speelie as well. An expert would be someone who's, well, an expert on something.
Every historian is an expert on something, but not every expert is a historian ;) (This applies to every profession btw)
Like Speelie, I sometimes like to apply the tools of our trade to my/our passion which would be music in general and Heavy Metal in particular.
I simply do not view knowing all the tracklists and lyrics as part of being a historian, that's just pointless knowledge without any real insight! Of course such people do exist, but that does not a historian make. It's about context, backgrounds, motivations, influences, inspirations, artistic development, putting artistic development into context etc.

I prefer this understanding of being a "historian", it's much more open and free and would allow people on here to consider themselves historians (or experts if you will) on certain bands without knowing all the lyrics or tracklists.

Take that little interaction between Rook and Krall above: Knowing the second line of some Celtic Frost song is an admirable feat, but it's also just barebones facts (that could easily be researched on MA btw) and that's it. A more interesting question, that would not be nearly as easy to answer would be: "Why did Tom G. Warrior write those lyrics?", "Who was he inspired by?", "How was what he wrote/composed received by peers at the time?" (These are pretty boring 1st semester thesis questions btw ).

Cheers :)
