I'd have gone Fatal Portrait and Abigail.

I think there's 4 mandatory Moonsorow albums.

Would have picked The Angel and the Dark River and The Dreadful Hours, but maybe it's not as mandatory as Turn Loose. Can't really go wrong in any case.

As for Gamma Ray, I decided to pick an album with Scheepers and one with Hansen to give a good overview of the band:

Heading for Tomorrow
Land of the Free

Next band: Nocturnal Rites

I'm not as crazy about that album as most people are. IMO, they don't have a bad album. In fact, I think every album is great.
I'm not too familiar with Gamma Ray, so passed them up here. Rebellion in Dreamland is a really cool song though.
Not familiar with Nocturnal Rites either. I think I've heard the first album.

It seems to be a favorite among their fans who don't like Swans, which would be me. It's not a very typical MDB album, more "cut to the chase" than anything they've done. I'd say there are two kinds of MDB fans and they fall on either side of that album.

I haven't ventured further than Afterlife just because I felt I didn't really need another Nocturnal Rites album in my life. Didn't know they turned to shit but I'm not too surprised either.

I'm also in the camp that feels Dreadful Hours to be a tad over-rated. Still a fine album, but I rank in the lower half of MDB's catalogue (of which there are no bad albums).

to me, TDH (as well as "light at the end") always felt like "MDB by the numbers".
