I don't care how sloppy his drumming was. He still contributed to four incredible albums. RIP, Lars.

Saying this is like saying one roast beef sandwich that James ate while recording Ride The Lightning was amazing because it contributed to a phenomenal album...

Well no, to give the devil his dues Lars is a very good arranger. Apparently back in the day he'd take James' riffs and give him advice on how long to go, etc. It's harder than it sounds, and Metallica's Glorious Four are exceptionally well-arranged.

He's a douche for sure, and not a great drummer. He was also kind of the band leader, and I think contributed a lot to their overall direction. Even though you can find flaws with him now when you look back, it is also worth noting that he was a lot better than most thrash drummers at the time. You can probably county on one hand the number that are significantly more advanced than him from the mid 80's. Most guys had their flaws, most bands had their warts. It was part of that era.

Even aside from his personality I still just don't like him. He may get a bit too much flack, but honestly his drums were definitely the weakest link of early Metallica. They're just so chunky and full of misplaced fills. 90% of the time his beats just don't match the riffs. Idk maybe I'm too judgemental but I can't think of a worse drummer from that period of thrash.

I guess to round it out and give him a touch of deserved credit, the snare hits to the opening riff of blackened are a fairly unique touch that works really well

I don't think that many guys were actually better in 1986. A lot of guys that were around in 1986 got better by the end of the decade, and Lars never really did. He started playing lazy half thrash/rock, and never really cared to I guess. That can be held against him, since he has tons of money to to as he pleases, and drumming is pretty much his job. Than again, dude has more money than god and people seem to lap up whatever they put out. Either it's radio hits for the masses, or a bunch of old guys on this board and elsewhere whacking their dick over anything that resembles a halfway decent comeback. Why bother I guess?

i just don't think that's true. if he was all over the place trainwrecking all the time they'd never have gotten anywhere near as big as they were even before they got as big as they are now.

In my opinion Lars' flaws and unorthodox choices make him a far more interesting drummer than most. He's obviously not the most technically gifted but there aren't too many drummers where I know their stuff by heart like I do with his. I was constantly tapping out his parts on my desk at school way back when. :drum: As previously noted, his arranging skills are a huge part of their sound. Just watch any making of documentary and you'll see how much James respects his opinion.

Lombardo, Hoglan...

Obviously, and you could probably rattle off 3 or 4 more pretty easy. Thats not many in the grand scheme.

In the grand scheme, every Thrash drummer in the 80s was better than Lars when it came to speed, technicality, precision...

Igor Cavalera
Charlie Benante
Dave Lombardo
Nick Menza & Gar Samuelson
Yes, even Ventor
Paul Bostaph
Witchhunter

EDIT: Or, let's put it like this: Which drummers were worse than Lars?

For real, I can't think of a drummer who's flaws I notice more than Lars. Anhurs statement just isn't true. Everyone from 86 was better...
