Post The Random Music Thread - fālsëpøsê
I figure why not have a thread to discuss music that is not metal, since I never really know where to post. I usually resort to Post Whorage, Things I like, of just the Random Metal Thoughts thread anyways... so for anything else that people care about, we can talk about it here. I'm sure it's been done before and failed, but whatever.

Neil Young is playing a 90min secret show this coming Friday, December 1st called "Somewhere in Canada". There are rumours that it could be in Omeemee, which is about 40 minutes north east of me... the town where he did most of his growing up. He's also teased Pickering, where he also spend time as a young person... which is just two towns west of me. 10 minute drive. Winnipeg he also teased.

Either way, if it's announced where it'll be ahead of time and tickets go on sale, they'll be so fucking expensive. It's supposed to be a super intimate show.

It'll be steamed live on the CTV website and iHeartRadio which I guess is for people outside of Canada.

Same day as his new album The Visitor is released.

I've never managed to see him live and it kills more and more each day. This would be a dream come true for me, but I have no idea what's going on.

Young is one of those musicians (for me at least) that is very much hit or miss. His good stuff is amazing, his bad stuff is putrid. There doesn't seem to be much middle ground, at least to my ears.

Here's hoping you get to see him!

I read an article about the Denver Dark wave scene, sampled a bunch of stuff and I couldn't be happier.

I like him well enough but others in his musical neighborhood I like better.

Of course. Deja Vu is one of my favourite albums of all time.

He's definitely hit or miss. But that was basically the 80's until he released Freedom, which is great. He was in a battle with his label who just wanted him to release something like Harvest or something rock again. The 70's are untouchable. The 90's have Ragged Glory and Harvest Moon which are perfection. 2000's have Greendale and Prairie Wind. '10's have Americana and Psychedelic Pill which is an absolute monster and easily top five Neil of all time.

Hell though... even I haven't heard all of his albums. Daunting.

Hell yes, one right here Longhorn.

I saw him live a few times back in his heyday when I was in H.S.

Someone recommended the latest Childish Gambino album to me, which is normally not my style of music at ALL, but I actually kinda dug it. Anyone else heard it?

He's touring now. Supposed to be really small clubs where he answers questions or something like that.

I haven't. I mean to pick it up still despite the songs all being on other albums. Kind of a cool peace to own. Maybe I'll pick it up with the new one this weekend.

I bought Brothers of the 4x4 by Hank III this afternoon.

I love his country stuff, but this record needed a producer. Lots of fat could have been trimmed away leaving an absolutely fantastic record. Instead it's a collection of great ideas, none of which were taken as far as they could have been taken.

Been a fan of Cash country since I was young whenmy parents used to play a random record of his, and really got into him when Rubin got involved back in the mid(?) 90's. Other than that, my knowledge of country is pretty slim, other than a few Merle songs/Highwaymen/Hank Jr songs. Will have to check out Hank III at some point.

Last year a buddy turned me on to Cody Jinks who is I guess considered to be in the vein of the "old school" or "outlaw" country. He incidentally used to be in a metal band but has pumped out 4 albums and an EP and has been living on the road for the last handful of years, selling out clubs and small theaters. Damn if his stuff doesn't resonate with me at some level-- I greatly enjoy about 75% of his material and have travelled to see him twice this year.

Speaking of production-- spun Jane's Addiction's "Nothing Shocking" today and holy shit, I forgot how great that record sounds-- fucking fantastic.

When the Rolling Stones played a show in L.A. on the Strip, it was to film a movie. They announced it like 12 hrs in advance, and if you got chosen to go, tickets were $20.

Yes: Twenty. Dollars.

So they may not be expensive. You may just have to be lucky.

Quote:
are performing a "surprise warm-up" show in Los Angeles on April 27, 2013. The announcement was made on April 27 on the official Rolling Stones Twitter account. Tickets for the show are $20 each, and will be distributed by lottery at the El Rey Theatre, beginning at 1 p.m. PDT on April 27. Ticket purchases are limited to one ticket per person and must be paid for in cash.
Various reports on the Internet are saying that the show will actually take place at the Echoplex in Los Angeles, but the tickets are being distributed at the El Rey Theatre. AEG Live is the owner of the El Rey Theatre. AEG Live's Concerts West is promoting the Rolling Stones' 2013 North American tour.

On record, Neil Young is another off tune hit or miss dude. Live i have nothing but respect. The guy is a rocker thru and thru that puts 90% of people half his age to shame.

Yeah as I said above... he releases so much stuff. Even is recent new material album Peace Trail isn't really for me. Which is why I imagine the new one coming out Friday will probably rule to me.

I'm curious what other people think are 'misses' though. Because I never really see anyone talking about Neil here other than a couple people. I'm wondering how much of his stuff you've heard, or if you're just talking about the stuff you hear on the radio.
