I'd guess that at least 75% of a Maiden audience buys some sort of merch. Of that probably most pony up for t-shirts. They charge that because they know folks will pay.

Bingo. The market decides.

I bought a Volbeat T-shirt at ProgPower 7 years ago for $5.

Bigger ripoff than a $50 Maiden shirt.

in newark dudes were lining the streets selling $10-15 knockoff maiden merch. those dudes deserve the money more than the band imo.

Right. I can't sit still.

I'm off to the show.
To those that attend, have fun.

Bought a shirt inside, and 1 in the parking lot.

Canadian tour shirt inside, 50 bucks.
Bootleg BOS shirt outside, 15 bucks.

Suits me, but yeah, really expensive.

The new way of things, people. Bands must earn more of their money from tickets and merch, since less and less is earned from selling audio and video product.

Besides, I'm sure people have wasted more money than that on other clothing items that turn out to be useless.

This is the wrong band for this argument.

Not sure about that, Maiden is as successful a metal band as you'll ever see. But that's not to say they do not also have huge costs. They actually still put on a stage show that's worth seeing - and haul it around in a 747 that's as optimized for low costs as it can be. (Lucky for them their singer is a guy who knows every trick there is in chartering an aircraft.)

Maiden is basically the template for what any metal band can expect to have at the top end. It is still possible to earn a good living just making music and putting on shows. How many metal bands - even well-known ones - can say that music alone pays the bills and pays them well?

The other end is ... a few guys hauling around in a half-broken old van, playing for drinks and bumming smokes off their own fans, just so they can afford the gas to reach the next show. And when they get back home, they go back to their real job, the one that earns money instead of costing money. How many metal bands - good ones - are still in that category? Lots.

So I think Maiden (and a few other bands) can actually be a good example to look at - not because they're music legends (in metal anyway), so much as the fact they have mastered the business & logistics side of what they do, so that they can keep doing it.

Maiden were great... Sound was a little fucked up in the lawns though. Or maybe everywhere, I don't know... Bruce's mic kept cutting out. It was frustrating.

and outrageously expensive shirts are not the "new thing". For large venue bands/shows, they've been expensive as fuck forever now. The last 16 years I've spent going to shows, they've always been beyond expensive. Why? Because the people still buy them... How many Iron Maiden shirts did we all see there last night? 10000 at least. Many from the last Book of Souls show they did in Toronto...

... Fuckin' failures. Wearing the band's shirt to the band's show.

I noticed the microphone thing too. Other than that small gripe though it was a great show. Pretty happy I went, even though I never really loved Maiden the way many people do.

I didn't wade through the lines, I only took a cursory look from as close as I could get. It looked like all of the same merch from their last go round, save for the Canada exclusive shirt which I somehow didn't notice until the end of the show when I was already thinking "just get home as quick as possible, save energy for Metallica".

They were selling patches for twenty bucks! TWENTY! And not even a goddamn back patch!

Got some good responses.

Maiden is the exception to the " don't be THAT guy" rule. can't get away with that anywhere else

At least one member of the fucking band always wears an Iron Maiden shirt on stage. I'm pretty sure that right there makes Iron Maiden an exception to the rule

definitely lower quality, but whatever it's $5

People were doing that (unless i was following you out) but didnt see anyone give in.

A guy in Vegas was going to sell me one for $5 when I told that's what I'd pay. But after looking over the shirt, the dates on the back were incorrect even though I could barely read them and the artwork on the front was blurry. I told him I wouldn't take one even if it was free.
