As good a death metal album as I've heard so far in 2014:

Image

I make no bones about the fact that I am insane Sinister fanboy, and am a fan of their entire catalog. You don't see me pigeon hole the band into the 'well, they ain't done NUTHIN since Hate was released' category, and if you are one of the unfortunate souls who fall into said mindset, then you need to get over THAT shit in a hurry, and check both this album out and The Carnage Ending, from 2012. Aad Kloosterward and his never ending revolving door line up have really nailed it on these past couple albums. Too bad they are signed to Massacre Records, who don't do much to promote their bands outside of Europe. These guys deserve to be pushed in front of more metal fans! This shit fucking crushes.

Lie In Ruins - Towards Divine Death

Incantation school of death metal, but with a thinner more black metalish sound. It took a couple of spins before I decided whether or not this one was worth posting in here. It is. The songs are long, and can be somewhat repetitive, but there are also some interesting things mixed in along the way. It’s enough to keep things from getting stale, and the repetitive nature of certain parts works in a frantic, intensity building kind of way. Neat album, worth a spin for people that like stuff like Grave Miasma and Mitochondrion. Not that it actually sounds like either of those bands, but I would expect fans of those bands to like it.

Exxxecutioner - Fear the Priest

Why pink???

I was digging through upcoming releases this week and came across this band. The EP doesn't technically come out for a few days but it's streaming in full on Terrorizer / Soundcloud, so whatever, I'll post it now.

This is dirty black/thrash from the UK; to quote Terrorizer: "Harking back to the unholy sounds of Hellhammer, Bathory and early Sodom and Kreator, Exxxekutioner ignore the more sanitised thrash approach of recent years in favour of a frantic, filthy and thoroughly unhinged metal assault. " It's not too dissimilar to bands like Sauron, Nocturnal, Trench Hell, etc.

This is the band's first release (not counting a demo last year) and with that in mind, I think it's a pretty damn good EP and I'm interested to see what this band does in the future. It's nothing new or brilliant or anything but... if you have tastes similar to mine and Burning Blade's, or if you username is Blasphomet, then I think it's worth your time checking out a few tracks.

Warfaring Strangers: Darkscorch Canticles

Image

Collection of obscure-ish songs from 70s proto-metal bands. Expect a lot of references to Lord of the Rings, the occult, and other spooky stuff.. I feel like I should probably play D&D to this.

1. Air - "Twelve O'Clock Satanial"
2. Wrath - "Warlord"
3. Stonehenge - "King of the Golden Hall"
4. Triton Warrior - "Sealed in a Grave"
5. Junction - "Sorcerer"
6. Stone Axe - "Slave of Fear"
7. Wizard - "Seance"
8. Stoned Mace - "Tasmania"
9. Arrogance - "Black Death"
10. Sonaura - "Song of Sauron"
11. Dark Star - "Spectre"
12. Inside - "Wizzard King"
13. Space Rock - "Dark Days"
14. Medusa - "Black Wizard"
15. Gorgon Medusa - "Sweet Child"
16. Hellstorm - "Cry For The Newborn"

Sophomore album by Joe Altier's post-Brand New Sin outfit. On the program: 70's tinged bluesy heavy rock.

The Dagger S/T

Image

For anyone into the classic metal sounds of Priest, Maiden, Rainbow, the Scorpions and Deep Purple, these feisty Swedes bring the swagger of the late 70's/early 80's into the new era of metal. And they do it well. Helps that the members used to play in bands like Grave and Dismember too before they decided to change their musical direction.

Their video for "1978": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHXbND10OlU

Threshold - For The Journey

Image

Out in September!

I've always felt this band is vastly underrated. Awesome progressive metal, the songs are ridiculously catchy. Don't expect Dream Theater-esque songs. These guys are more like Fates Warning but with a more technical edge - in both song writing and sound. Great riffs are to be expected and are always delivered.

These guys have always made solid releases since their debut in the 90's and deserve a lot more attention than they get.

Listen to "Watchtower On The Moon" from their upcoming album:

Valley of the Sun-"Electric Talons of the Thunderhawk"

Don't let the crappy name fool, this album rocks. I saw a review for a different band that lumped them in with the other 'occult' retro metal bands. I don't hear that at all, what I do hear are hooks and rockin' tunes. I would just call it metal, reminds me a bit of say ASG :guitar: 8)

Pretty good offering of black/thrash to be found here. I think I've only seen Blasphomet and myself enjoying this one, but I don't know if many people have had the opportunity to check it out yet.

This might be the best Nocturnal record I've heard, it's just solid all the way throughout with memorable hooks and riffs, and it sounds fantastic to boot. I mean, some of those riffs just fly - "Ripping Knives" and "Blessed Death" are fucking fantastic. Great release, and one my favourites this year.

I dug this one, but I think I am feeling the Gravehill record the label dropped around the same time a bit more. I agree that this album is kinda one giant wash but an enjoyable one. The Gravehill rips a little more and definitely delivers much more thoroughly in the hooks department.

The best DD release this year for me was definitely Thantifaxath, but I imagine the upcoming Horrendous will give it a run for its money.
